DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the home and looking through the waste of one of members of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
