Mary McDonnell

Mary McDonnell is an actress who has been nominated for two Oscars(r). She is famous for her portrayals of characters from the past and present screen roles. Mary Eileen McDonnell is a Pennsylvania-born actress. She was the daughter of Eileen (Mundy) who was an Irish-American computer expert, and John McDonnell. Growing up in Ithaca, New York, she graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia. She went on to drama school, and was later accepted into Long Wharf Theatre Company (East Coast). She was just 22 when she was offered her breakthrough film role in Dances with Wolves (1990), where she played "Stands with a Fist", a Sioux Indian woman who is white. For the role, she earned her first Academy Award nomination. McDonnell has appeared in the Lawrence Kasdan films Grand Canyon (1991), and Mumford (1999) in the role of experienced actors as Robert Redford and Sidney Poitier. She also appeared in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day (1996), with Will Smith. Margin Call (2011), which was against Kevin Spacey, earned McDonnell the Robert Altman award at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards. McDonnell played a prominent role in the Syfy Network's award winning series Battlestar Galactica (2004), where she was recognized for her portrayal of the President Laura Roslin. Her frequent guest appearance as host on the TV series ER (1994) earned her an Emmy nomination. TNT's hit drama show Major Crimes (2012) stars her as Captain Sharon Raydor. It is McDonnell's second series and she was nominated to win a Primetime Emmy(r). As a paraplegic soap-opera star in John Sayles' critically-acclaimed film Passion Fish (1992), she was awarded the Best Actress Academy Award(r) nomination, nomination, and Golden Globe nomination.
